Craftsmanship

I was browsing the book bins randomly in a charity shop when I came across "From here, you can’t see Paris" by Michael Sanders and since I was short of something to read, bought it.

It’s a lovely and poignant description of life in modern rural France.

Last night I got to a description of how Jacques, a busy chef, had been asked to improvise a meal for two difficult customers at the busiest point of one of the busiest nights of the year:

It was as if he couldn’t help himself, even when pressed and inconvenienced, from offering up a thing of beauty, and this for people who hadn’t even had the consideration to call ahead.

For me, that a perfect description of a craftsman (and I think of programmers as craftsmen/women) - someone who truly cares about their work.
